Akimushkin Igor

(1929 - 1993)

Russian writer, scientist-biologist, author of popular science books about animal life.

Born March 1, 1929 in Moscow in the family of an engineer. Interest in nature and biology has arisen in his early childhood.

In 1937 he began studying at school. He visited the circle of young biologists at the Moscow Zoo under the direction of P. Smolin.

Igor Akimushkin is the author of 96 scientific and artistic, popular science and children's works about animals.

In 1961, his first books were published: “Traces of unseen animals” and “By the path of legends: Stories about unicorns and basilisks”, telling how legends and rumors about almost fabulous and incredible animals turned into real discoveries of new species.

The most famous publication of the author is the series “The World of Animals” in 6 volumes. The first edition of the series was published from 1971 to 1975. The books of the series were distinguished by an abundance of photographs and an unusual design at that time. The pages were framed with wide white fields, decorated with drawings by A. Bloch and B. Zhutovsky.

In 1998, a reprint of the “World of Animals” was published, published in 4 volumes and supplemented with chapters on the missing types of invertebrates. Color photos were added to the design of the book, but the drawn illustrations that were present in the first edition were excluded.

The script I. Akimushkina released more than five popular science films. In 1965, the picture “Lighthouses in the sky” was published about the unique possibilities of birds in the field of navigation. Demonstrated experiments with insects and birds in their natural environment and laboratory conditions. A year later, the picture “To visit the octopus” was published with the subtitle “In the country of cephalopods”, the feature film “Following the trail of the sovereign”.

Akimushkin writes many books for the youngest children - “Who flies without wings?”, “Once there was a beaver”, “From evening until morning”, “Crocodile toothpick”, “Amazing birds”, “Sea and river animals”, etc.
