English writer, doctor, journalist, creator of one of the most popular characters of all times and peoples - the detective Sherlock Holmes.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in a family of Irish Catholics, known for his achievements in art and literature. The name Conan was given to him in honor of his mother’s uncle, artist and writer Michael Edward Conan.

Doyle chose literary activity for a reason: being a six-year-old child, Arthur wrote his debut story entitled The Traveler and the Tiger.

In 1876, the future writer graduated from the Jesuit Closed College Stonyhurst (Lancashire), then entered the University of Edinburgh, Faculty of Medicine. In 1881, having received a university degree and a bachelor of medicine degree, Conan Doyle took up medical practice.

In 1891, Arthur Conan Doyle published his first story in the series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Scandal in Bohemia. The works, combined as an amateur detective Sherlock Holmes, brought the author world-wide fame. "Etude in the crimson tones", "The Sign of the Four", "The Hound of the Baskervilles", "The Valley of Terror", collections of short stories, including "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" and "Notes on Sherlock Holmes", "The Return of Sherlock Holmes".

In 1912, Doyle published the science fiction story The Lost World, which opened a series of works about Professor Challenger. After it, the works “The Poisoned Belt” (1913), “The Country of Fog” (1926), “Disintegration Machine” (1929) and “When the Earth Cried Out” (1928) saw the light of day.

Arthur Conan Doyle is the author of several collections of poetry "Songs of Action" (1898), "Songs of the Road" (1911).

 The last significant work was the science fiction story "Marakotov abyss."

The vast majority of screen versions of the writer's creativity are devoted to Sherlock Holmes. Were filmed and other works of Arthur Conan Doyle. The Lost World (1925).

The most popular film about Sherlock Holmes, based on the stories of Arthur Conan Doyle, is the cycle of the Soviet television films "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson" (1978-1986), directed by Igor Maslennikov.
