Soviet film director, actor, screenwriter and writer. Honored Artist of the RSFSR.

Vasily Shukshin was born on July 25, 1929 in the village of Srostki, Biysky District, Altai Territory, into a peasant family.

In 1943, Shukshin graduated from the seven-year school in the village of Srostki and entered the Biysk Automotive College. In 1949, Shukshin was called to serve in the Navy. Shukshin's literary activity began in the army, it was there that he first tried to write stories that he read to his fellow servicemen.

In 1958, his first story, Two On a Cart, was published in the magazine Smena.

In 1956, Shukshin made his debut in the cinema: in Sergey Gerasimov’s film “Silent Don” (second series) he played in a tiny episode, depicting a sailor peeking from behind the fence. With this sailor, the cinematic fate of Shukshin the actor began.

While studying at VGIK in 1958, Shukshin starred in his first starring role in M. Khutsiyev’s film “Two Feodors”. In his thesis, "From Lebyazhego reported" Shukshin acted as a screenwriter, director and leading actor. The acting career was developing quite successfully, Shukshin did not experience a lack of offers from leading directors. Vasily Shukshin starred in such films as “Golden Echelon”, “Simple History”, “When the Trees were Large”, “Stoves-Benches”, “They Fought for the Motherland”, etc.

The heroes of the books and films of Shukshin are the Russian people of the Soviet village, simple workers with peculiar characters, observant and sharp on the tongue.

In the works of Shukshin given a concise and capacious description of the Russian village, his work is characterized by a deep knowledge of the language and details of life, it often comes to the fore deep moral problems, Russian national and universal values ​​(the stories «The Hunt to Live», «Cosmos, Nervous System and Shmat Sala» ).

Vasily Shukshin is the author of stories, novels, novels, scenarios such as “There is such a guy”, “Kalina Krasnaya”, “I came to give you free rein”, “Villagers”, “Before the third roosters”, “And they woke up in the morning”, "Energetic people" and others.
